For a long time I’ve hesitated to write about the Law of Attraction on this blog. First, there’s all the hype around the movie The Secret. All sorts of big name self-help gurus are talking about it – even Oprah. I didn’t want to seem to be jumping on the bandwagon.

Second, for a lot of people, myself included, the Law of Attraction is a little out there – it’s too new age. And I’m really not one of those woo woo, airy fairy types. I’m pretty grounded in reality.

In spite of my discomfort with this, I must make a confession. Hello – my name is Andrea and I believe in the Law of Attraction.

Yes it’s true. I’ve come to see the Law of Attraction as an essential part of running a business – particularly my business. In the off line world I’ve been teaching Law of Attraction workshops. I’ve seen great results from the students in my workshops. I’ve also been using it in my own life and business – and I’ve seen great results there too.

The thing about the Law of Attraction is that most business gurus refer to it and use it in some capacity or other – they just don’t always call it the Law of Attraction.

My first recognized example of it in my life happened about five years ago. My son was four and I had been a full time mom. About nine months earlier I’d begun working part time and was starting to look for full time work. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. And having been out of the workforce for so long, I wasn’t sure who would even want to hire me.

I picked up a copy of Cheryl Richardson’s book Stand Up for Your Life (Yah, I saw her on Oprah.) She has an exercise where you write a description of your ideal job. No job title needed. Just a list of the skills you wanted to use, the kind of people you wanted to work with – that kind of thing.

I did the exercise – being as complete as possible. I wanted to use a wide variety of skills including writing, administration, and working with volunteers. I wanted to work for a non-profit. I even wrote down that I wanted to wear casual clothes most days but occasionally need to dress up. And of course I wrote down a salary.

About a month later a member of the artists’ co-op where I was working part time came by to tell me that the symphony was looking for a full time administrator. I didn’t even know we had a symphony in town.

Well, to make a long story short – I applied for and got the job. And the job was exactly what I had written down – complete with dollar amount. I couldn’t believe it! I kept wishing I’d written down a larger number on my ideal job list.

Not only had I not known we had a symphony in town, but I have no musical ability. None at all. When I sang lullabies to my son when he was a baby, he used to cover my mouth and say, “Don’t make that noise mommy.” Working for a symphony was not an obvious choice for me.

But the job I was hired for so closely matched what I had written down, I was convinced – and still am – that the act of writing it down is what attracted the job to me. The Law of Attraction. I just didn’t know what it was called.

Join me tomorrow and I’ll go into some specifics about how to apply the Law of Attraction to your business.
