Seven Ways to Get New Topics to Blog About

How to get ideas for your blog
Spread the love

Writing a blog can be a challenge sometimes – how do I keep coming up with topics to write about? In fact, that’s one of the top reasons I hear from clients about why they don’t blog.

And yes, I do have that challenge myself some days. However, I don’t (usually) let it stop me. To help you out, I’ll share my strategies for keeping the ideas coming. How to get ideas for blog posts

1. Brainstorm

Some time when you’re not about to write a post, sit down and brainstorm a list of blog topics. Set a goal of 20 to 30 topics.

Then the next time you’re scheduled to write a post you can just pick one from the list. Better yet, choose your topic the night before. I always find I write faster when I’ve given my subconscious a night to mull it over.

2. Whiteboard

I keep a whiteboard next to my desk. Throughout the week when I get an idea I write it on the whiteboard. It may take you a while to get in the habit of looking for topics, but once you do you’ll rarely run out of ideas.

3. Analytics

Check out your Google Analytics for what people are searching for. If people are searching for a particular topic or keyword phrase, give them more of it.

4. Get inspired by others

Read other blogs. I use Feedly to follow a huge number of blogs. Reading other blogs will often give me an idea. I can expand on someone’s post with additional information, with a link back to the original post. Or I can write why I disagree. Either way, it’s a new blog post.

5. Your own stuff

Look at a product or service you’re promoting. Find a topic that relates to it. If you choose wisely you can add a line at the end of the post urging people to check out this product.

6. Ask

Ask your audience. What are people’s burning questions?

7. Create a list of resources

Lists are always popular. They’re easy to read and easy to write. Try your favourite online tools; the best blogs or podcasts to follow in your industry; the best articles from the past week.
