Boomers are not one-size-fits-all

The Blogging Boomers Carnival

One of my biggest pet peeves is how when talking about baby boomers most people (particularly the media) focus on retirement. And yet the baby boomer generation covers a much larger demographic. At a conference last week, one of the speakers pointed out that George Clooney and Brad Pitt are baby boomers!Boomers are a diverse group

The younger segment of boomers are in their 40s and 50s. Many will be working for another 15 years or longer. And yes, we are all wondering about paying for retirement.

But some of us are also paying for children’s university. Some of us are paying our own tuition as we return to school ourselves. Others are running businesses, striving for promotions and enjoying the success we’ve achieved so far while striving for yet more.

That is why I love being part of the Blogging Boomers Carnival. We represent a wide swath of the baby boomer generation. The diversity of our blogs and the topics we cover shows you can’t pigeon-hole boomers. There is no “typical” boomer. And we like it that way.

Here’s a sampling of the diversity of what the Blogging Boomers Carnival has to offer. Please visit these sites, read the articles and if you are so moved, join the conversation by leaving a comment.

Going to a networking event? What do you wear to look business-like but still fashionable? Get some suggestions from The Glam Gals at Fabulous after 40!

SoBabyBoomer tells us that procedural mistakes in the handling of mortgage documents have clouded titles establishing ownership of the homes, a problem that could plague both buyers and sellers for years.  The key question is: Do you know who holds the title to your house?

How do you work with your own intuition? It can be an essential tool, especially when you’re going through some tough life changes!

DIY bacon? Why not? It’s easy and it’s just one of the many easy to make food items the Accidental Locavore will show you how to make “out of the box”.

Over at Contemporary Retirement, Ann has a 2 minute video that could heal your heart.

LifeTwo.com discusses the Psychology Today article that declares ”Many middle-aged men go through midlife crisis, but it’s not because they are middle-aged but because their wives are.”

The Boomer Chronicles asks, “What’s waiting for you at home tonight?”

And finally, Twitter is an amazing tool for connecting with people and sharing information. And it’s one of the easier social networking tools to automate but should you? I take another look at the automated direct message in Twitter and discuss whether or not you should do it.

Enjoy!

Blogging Boomers Carnival 162 goes to the dogs

by Andrea J. Stenberg
May 17th, 2010

This past weekend was the unofficial end of spring here in Canada. This coming weekend is known as the May 2-4 weekend; a long weekend officially celebrating the birth of Queen Victoria but in reality, the traditional time for opening the cottage for the summer. In unusual fashion, this year’s long weekend actually includes May 24th or Victoria’s birthday.

I spent part of Sunday, as per usual, walking at Inglis Falls, just south of Owen Sound. The water coming over the dam is much higher than usual. The Trilliums, Ontario’s official flower, are almost finished blooming and the trees are in full leaf.

This week’s Blogging Boomers Carnival is hosted by It’s All About Aging. We seem to have a strange number of posts including dogs – protest dogs in Greece, Boomer women finding activities for their dogs – as well as mother-of-the-bride dresses, living to 100, will Yiddish die out, sexual secrets of women and LinkedIn. Please check out the Carnival and leave a comment or two if you’re so moved.

Have a good week.

Boomers Are One Third More Likely to Start a Business

by Andrea J. Stenberg
March 17th, 2010

Thanks to my colleague Jeff Apton, I recently discovered the report The Coming Entrepreneurship Boom from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. This study states that in the United States an entrepreneurial boom is looming; a boom created by baby boomers.Baby Boomers more likely to be entrepreneurial than younger counterparts

Apparently, Americans aged 55 to 64 are more likely to become entrepreneurs than those aged 20 to 34. For many people this statistic is counter-intuitive. Younger people are more likely to take risks, right?

Wrong! According to this particular study, “In every single year from 1996 to 2007, Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those aged 20-34.”

How much higher? One third.

But that’s not all. The study also notes that “a longitudinal survey of nearly 5,000 companies that began in 2004, two-thirds of firm founders are between the ages of 35 and 54.”

What are the causes of this baby boomer boom? The study suggests Read More→

Happy Summer from the Blogging Boomers Carnival

by Andrea J. Stenberg
June 22nd, 2009

For those in the northern hemisphere it is officially summer. And here in Owen Sound we’ve finally passed the unseasonablely cool weather we’ve had this spring and are actually having some warm weather. Unfortunately my son is being his usual stubborn self and insists on wearing his winter pants – then wonders why he’s too hot!

To celebrate the arrival of summer, most of the Blogging Boomers Carnival members have written posts on a summer theme. These include detoxifying your mind, body and home for summer, honoring the solstice, updating hair styles so you don’t look old, how postmenopausal boomer women can regulate the effect of summer heat on their body plus a cleaver job-search technique.

Enjoy the posts and the weather.
