There have been many times, when dealing with an irate person, I've asked myself if they are mad about something else and they're kicking the dog - ME! We've all lashed out at innocent bystanders (usually our kids?) when we're angry or upset. If we can remember that when a customer is being hostile, the compassion Andrea responded to may be a good tactic sometimes. (I'm not naive to believe it would work all the time....)

Kieran,

In general I agree. I've had experiences with "clients from hell" who needed to be given boundaries or in once case, "fired".

However, I guess my point with this article is to trust your gut. The truly horrid clients usually gave you plenty of warning signs. If you'd listened to your gut, you'd have avoided the pain.

In this case, my gut told me there was something more to the story. In the end, we helped a grieving family and made a raving fan.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Although you were lucky in correctly perceiving this man to be a client that needed help, he still shouldn’t have got that house call because of his manner which made him a client from Hell. He, not you, should have realised he needed help and that his behaviour was not appropriate. You made a rod for your own back and would warn against anybody else doing the same.
