Andrea,

I love the example you gave! It is amazing how our perceptions of our business do not always match up with the facts of our business.

If you are interested, I posted on my blog an outline of what an initial assessment form might look like and what the benefits of having a form would be.

Ursula,

In my experience, not only do small business owners not keep enough information on their customers to give them insight, they rarely look at the info they do keep.

There's a great example in the most recent issue of Inc. magazine. A small business was having cash flow issues. After meeting with an adviser they discovered their two biggest clients were actually costing them $50,000 per year because of errors in pricing.

Your initial assessment form is a great idea.

Andrea,
I am a big proponent of collecting data on your clients. I am wondering though if most small business owners keep customer lists that are really detailed enough to give them the insight they need to differentiate their lemonade from their kool-aid customers.

I advocate that at the very least small business owners use an initial needs assessment to gather detailed information on their clients. This assessment form will not only help them serve their clients better because they are gathering good information but also function as an avenue for data collection that will illustrate trends in their customers and help them with market segmenting.
