These are all great ideas which I agree with. No one wants their readers to encounter a 404 error, but you need to be prepared in case they do. And a friendly or humorous 404 page can keep visitors on your site and even build your relationship with the prosepct. 

BUT I also suggest that there may be &quot;unused real estate&quot; on your custom designed 404 page, which you COULD use to your financial advantage...

What about strategic links to affiliate products or a link to a survey question that would allow you to gain additional information about what your visitor is seeking?
