No one wants their readers to encounter a 404 error, but you need to be prepared in case they do. And a friendly or humorous 404 page can keep visitors on your site and even build your relationship with the prosepct. BUT I also suggest that there may be "unused real estate" on your custom designed 404 page, which you COULD use to your financial advantage...
